Donald Trump says Putin and Zelensky want peace

US President Donald Trump stated that both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky conveyed a willingness to achieve peace during separate phone conversations with him on Wednesday. Following these discussions, Trump directed senior US officials to initiate talks aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

These developments came after Trump's defense secretary suggested that Ukraine might have to reconsider its aspirations of joining NATO and relinquish claims to territories occupied by Russia. This marked a notable shift in the US stance toward the war.
During his over-hour-long conversation with Putin, Trump said the Russian leader expressed a desire to bring the war to an end. He mentioned that they explored the possibility of securing a ceasefire in the near future.
"I believe we are moving toward peace. President Putin wants peace, President Zelensky wants peace, and I want peace. I just want the violence to stop," Trump said.
Trump has consistently claimed he could swiftly resolve the war in Ukraine, though he has not provided specific details on how he would achieve this.
According to the Kremlin, Putin and Trump agreed to hold an in-person meeting, with Putin extending an invitation for Trump to visit Moscow. However, Trump suggested that their first meeting would likely take place soon in Saudi Arabia.
