Xi-Putin discuss relations with Trump, Ukraine and Taiwan
Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin
Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a detailed video discussion on strengthening their bilateral relationship shortly after Donald Trump assumed office as the 47th President of the United States.
During their conversation, which lasted over 90 minutes, the two leaders explored potential avenues for engagement with the newly inaugurated U.S. administration. The Kremlin revealed on Tuesday that the dialogue also touched upon strategic areas like trade, energy, and geopolitical concerns.
China, as Russia's top energy consumer and largest oil export market, plays a pivotal role in their economic partnership. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to boosting trade and enhancing economic cooperation.
According to Kremlin foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov, Xi and Putin expressed openness to building constructive relations with the US, emphasizing mutual respect and shared benefits. However, they stressed that this willingness depends on the Trump administration demonstrating genuine interest in fostering such ties.
The discussion also addressed the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Putin conveyed Russia’s readiness to engage in dialogue with the U.S. on the issue, advocating for a long-term resolution over temporary ceasefires. Trump, for his part, has indicated a flexible stance, suggesting that Ukraine’s pursuit of self-determination could take a backseat to achieving broader peace and stability.
On the matter of Taiwan, Russia reaffirmed its unwavering support for Beijing's 'one China' policy. Ushakov highlighted that Moscow's stance aligns closely with China's efforts to maintain sovereignty over Taiwan.
