Canada PM Trudeau to announce resignation as early as Monday
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is anticipated to announce his resignation as the leader of the Liberal Party as early as Monday, according to The Globe and Mail, citing three informed sources.
The sources noted that while the exact timing of Trudeau’s announcement remains uncertain, they believe it will take place before a significant national caucus meeting scheduled for Wednesday.
Requests for comments from the Prime Minister’s Office went unanswered outside regular business hours, and details about whether Trudeau will step down immediately or remain in office until a new leader is chosen are still unclear.
Trudeau became the leader of the Liberal Party in 2013, at a time when the party faced significant challenges, having dropped to third place in the House of Commons for the first time in its history. Under his leadership, the Liberals experienced a resurgence, winning a majority government in 2015.
However, recent polls indicate that the Liberal Party faces steep challenges, with predictions of a decisive loss to the Conservatives in the next federal election, required by October at the latest. Trudeau's anticipated resignation could add further uncertainty to the party’s future.
The report also suggested that Trudeau has spoken with Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc about the possibility of serving as interim leader and prime minister. However, one source cautioned that this arrangement could prove problematic if LeBlanc intends to contest the party’s leadership himself.
