No one can separate Taiwan from China: Xi Jinping
Chinese President Xi Jinping declared on Tuesday that China’s reunification with Taiwan is inevitable and cannot be obstructed.
In his 2025 New Year’s address, as reported by Xinhua News Agency, Xi emphasized the shared heritage between the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. 'We Chinese, whether on the mainland or in Taiwan, are one family. The ties of kinship that unite us cannot be broken,' he stated.
He further asserted, 'The historical momentum driving the reunification of our motherland cannot be halted.'
Xi’s comments come amid rising tensions over Taiwan. Since Taiwanese President William Lai Ching-te assumed office in May, Beijing has conducted three large-scale military exercises, including simulated blockades of the island. Meanwhile, Taiwan has responded with 'tabletop exercises' to strengthen its emergency response capabilities.
China views Taiwan as a 'breakaway province,' though the island has operated independently since 1949. The issue continues to be a critical point of contention, particularly as Donald Trump prepares to take office as US president on January 20.
