Trudeau accuses India of promoting violence in Canada

Canadian Premier Justin Trudeau has accused the Indian government of instigating violence in Canada, specifically targeting Sikh separatists.

In a statement during an inquiry into foreign interference, Trudeau asserted that India had breached Canada's sovereignty by targeting Sikh dissidents, labeling it a 'serious mistake.'
His remarks came shortly after Canada expelled six Indian diplomats. This marked Trudeau's strongest statement in a year-long dispute that has significantly strained relations between the two nations.
Trudeau criticized India's actions, stating, 'The Indian government made a serious mistake in believing they could interfere so blatantly with the safety and sovereignty of Canada.' He made this claim during an independent investigation into foreign interference in Canadian politics.
He also linked the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Sikh leader, to a broader effort by India to target dissidents on Canadian soil. While recognizing the importance of trade ties with India, Trudeau underscored the need to prioritize Canada's sovereignty.
In response, India's foreign ministry released a brief statement reiterating its position, saying Trudeau's claims lacked evidence to substantiate the allegations against Indian diplomats. The ministry further asserted that the responsibility for the deteriorating relations between the two countries rested with Trudeau.
Trudeau indicated that Ottawa might take additional measures to ensure the safety of its citizens but did not provide specifics.
India has denied the accusations of interference and retaliated by expelling six Canadian diplomats.
