China discusses military training with Myanmar junta
The new Chinese ambassador to Myanmar, Ma Jia, met junta defense minister General Tin Aung San in Naypyitaw on Wednesday to discuss border security and joint military training, regime media reported.
The Chinese Embassy highlighted that military cooperation forms a key aspect of the bilateral relationship between the two nations. General Tin Aung San expressed gratitude for China's defense support and assistance, emphasizing the desire for stronger ties between the two countries.
Additionally, Ma Jia met with Myanmar's junta foreign minister, Than Swe, on the same day, where they reached significant agreements, though specific details were not disclosed by the embassy.
Earlier this week, China conducted live-fire military exercises near its border with northern Shan State, an area currently controlled by anti-regime forces.
Since the 2021 coup, China has remained one of the few allies of Myanmar's military regime, while also maintaining connections with rebel groups opposing the junta.
In a report released in May last year, United Nations special rapporteur Tom Andrews revealed that Myanmar's military had procured approximately 267 million US dollar worth of weapons and military equipment from China since the coup.
