As the general election approaches, political debate is heating up in the UK. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak reiterated his pledge to start flights transporting asylum seekers to Rwanda in July, contingent on his re-election.
Rishi Sunak's comments were made during a special election program on Sky News on Wednesday, where he fielded questions from both the public and the press.
Sunak noted a 10% decrease in illegal migrants over the past year, crediting the government's effective policies during the last 18 months of his leadership.
He stressed that his administration is on the right track, particularly with the Rwanda plan, a contentious policy aimed at sending asylum seekers to Rwanda while their applications are processed in the UK.
This plan has faced significant opposition from both rival political parties and human rights organizations, who argue it is inhumane and breaches international asylum laws.
Despite the criticism, Sunak stood firm, stating that high immigration levels exert considerable pressure on public services.
During the televised program, migration and taxes were the central issues discussed. As the election date nears, debates over migration, taxation, and leadership conduct are intensifying, with both Sunak and Labour Party leader and prime minister hopeful Keir Starmer outlining their visions for the UK's future.
Sunak highlighted that although migration numbers have risen by 40% this year, his administration made notable progress by reducing the numbers last year.
Regarding taxes, he assured the public that he would not increase them if re-elected, instead promising to reduce certain taxes.
