UK premier Sunak announces general election on July 4

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak declared on Wednesday that the United Kingdom (UK) will hold a general election on July 4.

In his speech at Downing Street, Sunak confirmed that the country will go to the polls on Thursday, July 4. 'Earlier today, I spoke with His Majesty the King to request the dissolution of parliament. The King has granted this request and we will have a general election on the fourth of July,' he stated.
Sunak emphasized that this election is happening at a time when the global situation is 'more dangerous than it has been since the end of the Cold War.'
The announcement followed a Cabinet meeting chaired by Sunak at the Prime Minister's Office in Downing Street.
During the Prime Minister's Questions (PMQs) session in the House of Commons, Stephen Flynn, the Scottish National Party's Westminster leader, asked Sunak if he was "feart" (afraid) of holding an election.
In response, the premier reiterated that the election would be held in the latter half of the year, a timeline he had previously mentioned multiple times.
