Johnson's government has announced a complete lockdown for England's 56 million people_ which could last until mid-February.

The measures were taken amid a huge spurt in coronavirus cases which saw 80_000 fresh infections on one day in the end of December. If unchecked_ the National Health Service will be overwhelmed_ Mr Johnson had said while making the lockdown announcement_ which came into effect on Monday night.

On Tuesday_ the UK recorded more than 60_000 new cases.

Boris Johnson would have been the second British Prime Minister to attend the Republic Day parade as the Chief Guest after his predecessor John Major in 1993.
