Philippines says China coast guard collided with supply ship
The Philippines has accused China's coast guard of colliding with a Filipino supply boat in the South China Sea. The Filipino vessel was en route to a Philippine outpost in the Second Thomas Shoal, where tensions have been mounting over the past few weeks.
Manila has expressed deep concerns regarding Beijing's actions, describing them as 'dangerous blocking maneuvers' that put the safety of the Filipino crew at risk. On the other hand, China has vehemently denied the accusations, stating that the Philippines intentionally provoked the incident.
The Second Thomas Shoal has been a focal point of tensions as Chinese and Philippine vessels engage in a recurring game of cat-and-mouse. This area is of critical importance, as it houses a small contingent of Filipino troops stationed on a weathered navy ship, dependent on regular supplies.
Filipino authorities have observed an escalation in China's assertiveness in the region, particularly since the assumption of office by Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in June 2022. President Marcos sought to strengthen military ties with Washington, which is viewed as Beijing's primary competitor for influence in the resource-rich and strategically significant South China Sea.
In a separate incident, near the Second Thomas Shoal on the same day, Filipino authorities reported that a Chinese militia vessel had collided with a Philippine coast guard ship. Despite these challenges, a second supply ship managed to reach the Philippine outpost in the shoal.
It is essential to note that China claims nearly the entire South China Sea, including the Spratly Islands, where the Second Thomas Shoal is situated. These territorial claims overlap with those of other nations, including the Philippines and Vietnam.
In 2016, an international arbitration court in The Hague delivered a landmark ruling, stating that China's expansive territorial claims in the South China Sea lacked a legal basis. This judgment was made in response to a case brought by Manila. However, China has refused to acknowledge the court's decision, further complicating the situation in this disputed region.
