China's Xi Jinping likely to skip G20 summit in India
According to sources familiar with the situation in both India and China, it appears that Chinese President Xi Jinping will not be attending the upcoming G20 summit scheduled to take place in India next week.
Instead, it is expected that Premier Li Qiang will be representing Beijing at the summit, which is set to occur on September 9-10 in New Delhi.
The G20 summit in India had garnered attention as a potential forum for a meeting between President Xi and U.S. President Joe Biden. Biden has confirmed his participation, and the summit was seen as an opportunity for the two major global powers to address and potentially improve their strained relations, which have been marred by various trade and geopolitical disputes.
The last in-person meeting between Xi Jinping and Joe Biden took place on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Bali, Indonesia, in November of the previous year.
In addition to Xi's absence, Russian President Vladimir Putin has already declared that he will not be making the trip to New Delhi for the summit. Instead, he will be sending Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to represent Russia at the event.
Leading up to the G20 summit, several ministerial meetings among G20 nations in India have been marked by contention. Notably, Russia and China jointly opposed statements that included sections condemning Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine, an event that occurred the previous year and continues to be a point of international concern.
