UN Reports 172 Palestinians Killed by Israeli Forces in 2023
The United Nations disclosed on Monday that Israeli forces have killed the lives of at least 172 Palestinians in the occupied West Bank since the beginning of this year.
In a statement, the UN Humanitarian Affairs Office (OCHA) noted that "The number of Palestinians killed in the West Bank and Israel by Israeli forces so far in 2023 (172) has surpassed the total number killed in all of 2022 (155)." This grim statistic is particularly alarming given that 2022 was already marked as a year with the highest fatalities in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, since 2005.
According to data from the UN office, there have been at least 705 Palestinians injured by Israeli gunfire in the West Bank this year, surpassing the figure for 2022, which stood at 411.
On an equally troubling note, Human Rights Watch (HR) announced on Monday that 2022 was the deadliest year for Palestinian children in 15 years, with at least 34 children losing their lives due to Israeli actions.
Tensions have been escalating in the occupied West Bank in recent months, marked by repeated Israeli incursions into Palestinian towns, alongside attacks and confrontations involving Israeli settlers, often under the protection of the Israeli army.
