US urges China to cease Taiwan pressure

The United States has called upon China to halt its pressures on Taiwan following Beijing's commencement of military exercises near the self-governed island, which were viewed as a 'stern warning' in response to recent visits by Taiwanese Vice President William Lai to New York and San Francisco.

This appeal coincided with Taiwan's announcement on Sunday, reporting the passage of approximately 25 Chinese air force aircraft over the median line of the Taiwan Straits within the last 24 hours.
Among these aircraft were Su-30 and J-11 fighter jets, as indicated on a map published by Taiwan's Ministry of Defense. However, there was no immediate indication that China intended to prolong these exercises into a second day.
A spokesman from the US Department of State affirmed their commitment to closely monitoring China's military activities and urged Beijing to 'cease its military, diplomatic, and economic pressures on Taiwan, opting instead for constructive dialogue with the island.'
The historical context of the Taiwan-China relationship dates back to 1949, when they diverged following a civil war that concluded with the Communist Party taking control of mainland China.
Although Taiwan has never been a part of the People's Republic of China, Beijing views the democratically-run island as a renegade province, and they have expressed their intent to reclaim it by force if necessary.
