MI6 Chief Holds China Responsible for 'Tragic' Situation in Myanmar
The head of the British foreign intelligence service MI6, Sir Richard Moore, has asserted that China bears responsibility for the 'tragic' state of affairs in Myanmar due to its prominent support of the military regime.
Speaking during a briefing with journalists in Prague, Sir Richard Moore expressed deep concern over the situation unfolding in Myanmar, describing the country as "wonderful" and the ongoing events as "appalling."
When asked whether he was worried about China's role in bolstering the military junta, the MI6 chief confirmed that China, indeed, plays a significant role in supporting the regime. Drawing from his own visit to Myanmar a few years ago, Moore emphasized the gravity of the current situation, characterizing it as "deeply, deeply tragic."
China's unwavering support for the military junta has come under scrutiny, raising questions about the regime's ability to operate as it does without such backing. The connection between China and the military leadership has drawn international attention, with concerns about the implications of this support on the unfolding events in Myanmar.
In May, China's foreign minister, Qin Gang, visited Myanmar, meeting with the leader of the junta, Min Aung Hlaing, in a public display of the ongoing support provided by the powerful neighbor.
Further evidence of China's backing is evident in the construction of a new railway line, opened in 2021, with a substantial terminal in Lincang designed to facilitate trade from China to Myanmar and beyond. This project underscores the deep economic ties between the two nations.
