Arab leaders approve $53b reconstruction plan for Gaza

Arab leaders have approved a $53 billion (£41.4 billion) reconstruction initiative as an alternative to the proposal put forward by US President Donald Trump, which suggested the relocation of over two million Palestinians and US oversight of Gaza. The decision was reached during an emergency summit held in Cairo, Egypt.

Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary General of the Arab League, confirmed the adoption of the plan, stating, "The Egypt plan is now an Arab plan." While he did not directly reference President Trump’s proposal, he emphasized that the Arab nations firmly oppose any form of Palestinian displacement, whether voluntary or forced.
Egypt introduced a comprehensive strategy detailed in a 91-page document, complete with images showcasing developed neighborhoods and impressive public infrastructure. This initiative serves as a response to the U.S. vision, often described as a "Middle East Riviera," which had sparked concern across the Arab world and beyond.
What makes this initiative distinct is its focus beyond mere infrastructure development; it underscores the political and humanitarian rights of Palestinians.
During his opening speech, Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi stressed the necessity of pursuing a political resolution alongside physical reconstruction. He reiterated the call for a two-state solution, which envisions an independent Palestinian state existing alongside Israel. This approach is widely supported by Arab nations and other international actors as a sustainable resolution to the longstanding conflict. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his allies remain opposed to this solution.
