Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi killed in helicopter crash
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian have died in a helicopter crash in the mountainous terrain of East Azerbaijan province, according to an Iranian official on Monday after search teams discovered the wreckage.
'President Raisi, the foreign minister, and all other passengers on the helicopter were killed in the crash,' stated the senior Iranian official, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the situation.
Iran's Mehr news agency confirmed the fatalities, stating, 'All passengers of the helicopter carrying the Iranian president and foreign minister were martyred.'
Earlier reports from an Iranian official indicated that the helicopter carrying Raisi and Amirabdollahian was completely burned in the crash on Sunday.
State television broadcast images from the crash site showing the helicopter wreckage on a mountain peak, although there was no official word on the cause of the crash.
