Independent Palestinian state ‘prerequisite' before normalization with Israel: Saudi

Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan asserted on Saturday that the establishment of an independent Palestinian state is a fundamental prerequisite for establishing diplomatic ties with Israel.

Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Bin Farhan outlined Saudi Arabia's position on the Gaza Strip and the broader Palestinian issue. He underscored the importance of a two-state solution, emphasizing that the commitment of the United States and Israel to such a resolution is crucial for regional stability.
Bin Farhan expressed concern about Israel's actions in Gaza, stating that these actions evoke strong emotions among Arabs and Muslims and warned of potential repercussions for Israel across various aspects.
Addressing the issue of diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel, Bin Farhan made it clear that there is currently no relationship between the two nations. He highlighted that Saudi Arabia's primary focus is on resolving the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. He emphasized the need for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state as a prerequisite for any normalization with Israel.
Normalization, according to Bin Farhan, is contingent upon adherence to the Arab Peace Plan. He reminded that since 2002, Arab League member countries have maintained their rejection of normalization with Israel until it accepts the "land for peace" principle. This principle entails recognizing an independent Palestinian state with its capital in East Jerusalem, based on the borders established in 1967.
