Iran warns Israel to stop war in Gaza or region will 'go out of control'
Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian issued a stark warning to Israel, cautioning that continued airstrikes on Gaza could lead to a dangerous escalation in the Middle East. He also held the United States partially responsible for providing military support to Israel.
Hours after this statement, Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu rallied his troops, emphasizing that his people were engaged in a high-stakes battle against Hamas, characterizing it as a 'do or die' situation.
Over the past two weeks, according to the Hamas-run health ministry, more than 4,600 Palestinians have lost their lives in Gaza. Israel, on its part, announced an intensification of air strikes on Saturday.
At a news conference in Tehran Mr. Amir-Abdollahian emphasized, 'I warn the US and its proxy, Israel, that if they do not immediately cease the actions that are perceived as crimes against humanity and genocidal in Gaza, the situation could rapidly spiral out of control. The consequences could be severe, bitter, and have widespread repercussions, both regionally and for those advocating for military actions.'
The Foreign Minister also underscored that the US military support for Israel was indicative of the ongoing conflict in Gaza being viewed as 'a proxy war carried out by Israel on behalf of the United States.'
US officials have also expressed concerns about the potential for further escalation. US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin issued a warning about the possibility of a 'significant escalation of attacks' targeting US troops or citizens.
