Iran_ Argentina Applies to Join BRICS Group of emerging countries
Iran and Argentina has submitted an application to become a member of the group of emerging economies known as the BRICS.
Iran s membership in the BRICS group_ which includes Brazil_ Russia_ India_ China and South Africa_ 'would result in added values for both sides_' said Iran s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson.
Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova said separately that Argentina had also applied to join the group.
Argentina s President Alberto Fernandez_ currently in Europe_ has in recent days reiterated his desire for Argentina to join this group.
Russia has long been pushing to forge closer relations with Asia_ South America and the Middle East_ but it has intensified its efforts recently to weather sanctions imposed by Europe_ the United States and other countries over its invasion of Ukraine.
BRICS account for more than 40% of the world's population and about 26% of the international economy.
The term BRIC was coined by Goldman Sachs economist Jim O Neill in 2001 to describe the startling rise of Brazil_ Russia_ India and China. The BRIC powers had their first summit in 2009 in Russia. South Africa joined in 2010_ and the group called BRICS.
