Global leaders convene in Baku for COP29, seek climate solutions

The 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) commenced in Azerbaijan on Monday, bringing together world leaders, policymakers, and activists with a renewed commitment to address intensifying climate crises.

Scheduled to run until November 22, COP29 will focus on pressing issues such as global warming, climate adaptation, and sustainability solutions. With the frequency of extreme weather events rising and global temperatures at record highs, the conference serves as a crucial forum for collaborative climate action.
'COP29 will unite leaders from governments, business, and civil society to foster concrete solutions to the defining issue of our time,' the UN stated, emphasizing the importance of collective efforts to counter the worsening impacts of climate change.
This year’s conference will give significant attention to climate finance. The UN has highlighted the need for trillions of dollars to help nations dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions and build resilience to climate-related threats.
'Climate finance will be a major theme at COP29, as substantial funding is needed for countries to cut emissions and protect people and economies from the escalating impacts of climate change,' according to the UN.
The UNFCCC, created in 1992 in response to findings from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), aims to stabilize greenhouse gas levels and prevent severe human-driven climate disruption. Since its founding, it has supported landmark agreements like the Kyoto Protocol (1997) and the Paris Agreement (2015).
Each year, the UNFCCC’s 198 member countries meet to evaluate progress and negotiate unified strategies to confront climate challenges. This year’s conference in Baku is set to emphasize stronger commitments and innovative financing solutions to accelerate global climate progress.
