EU ministers convene in Ukraine to show support after US, Slovakia wobbles

European Union foreign ministers have made history by holding their inaugural meeting outside the EU in Ukraine. This gathering serves as a strong demonstration of support for Ukraine, following recent events that raised concerns about the country's international backing.

These concerns include the election of a pro-Russian candidate in Slovakia and the omission of funding for Kyiv in a U.S. Congressional spending bill.
Josep Borrell, the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, emphasized the significance of this meeting in Ukraine, a candidate country and future EU member. He stated, "We are convening a historic meeting of EU Foreign Ministers here in Ukraine, candidate country and future member of the EU. We are here to express our solidarity and support to the Ukrainian people."
While there has been uncertainty regarding the continuity of U.S. support for Ukraine, Washington has maintained that its commitment to Ukraine, both militarily and politically, remains unwavering. This assertion comes despite the exclusion of Ukraine-related funds from an emergency spending deal reached by the US Congress over the weekend to prevent a government shutdown.
It's worth noting that some right-wing Republican supporters of former President Donald Trump have increasingly advocated for the cessation of funding to Ukraine. However, President Joe Biden's administration remains confident that a measure to sustain aid to Ukraine will be passed in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives.
President Biden in a Sunday statement, urged congressional Republicans to support the aid package, expressing his frustration with the political brinkmanship that had nearly led to a government shutdown. These developments underscore the ongoing significance of international support for Ukraine in the face of evolving political dynamics.
