Xi Jinping says tariffs and trade wars hurt world economic order

Chinese President Xi Jinping has warned that tariffs and trade wars undermine the global economic system, damage multilateral trade, and infringe upon the legitimate interests of all nations.
His remarks were reported by Xinhua news agency during a meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Beijing on Wednesday. Aliyev is currently on a state visit to China from April 22 to 24. During their talks, Xi emphasized China’s readiness to work with Azerbaijan to uphold the international order and deepen cooperation in security and law enforcement.
'China is committed to preserving the international system with the United Nations at its core and promoting fairness and justice in global affairs,' Xi stated, according to Xinhua.
The discussions between the two leaders led to the announcement of a new comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Azerbaijan. As part of this upgraded relationship, both countries signed 20 cooperation agreements under the framework of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). These agreements span multiple sectors including legal affairs, green development, the digital economy, intellectual property protection, and aerospace.
Azerbaijan, strategically located between Iran, Russia, Georgia, and Armenia, was among the earliest supporters of the BRI—a global infrastructure strategy launched by Xi in 2013 to boost China’s economic and political influence.
As part of their growing partnership, China and Azerbaijan agreed on a mutual visa exemption for holders of regular passports and pledged to enhance collaboration across a variety of sectors. This includes expanding market access for eco-friendly agricultural goods and renewable energy products.
Additionally, both nations expressed a shared commitment to improving customs procedures and logistics efficiency. They also plan to develop a secure and stable China-Europe trans-Caspian transport route, aiming to strengthen connectivity across the region.
