UN envoy urges early political settlement in Myanmar for Rohingya repatriation

The United Nations Special Envoy on Myanmar, Julie Bishop, has called for a swift political resolution in Myanmar to facilitate the safe return of the Rohingya refugees to their homeland.
Bishop made the statement during a meeting with Md. Touhid Hossain, foreign affairs adviser to Bangladesh’s interim government, at his office in Dhaka on Sunday.
Since August 2017, Bangladesh has been sheltering over 1.2 million Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar following a military crackdown in Myanmar that forced them to flee.
Currently on a two-day visit to Bangladesh, Bishop is set to visit the Rohingya refugee camps on Monday. She emphasized her commitment to keeping global attention on the crisis and expressed hope that an upcoming UN conference, proposed by Bangladesh’s interim Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, would mobilize meaningful international action.
Adviser Touhid Hossain acknowledged the crucial role of the UN and its special envoy in finding a lasting resolution to the crisis, which continues to impact Bangladesh significantly. He warned that failing to secure a sustainable solution would not only affect Myanmar and Bangladesh but could also threaten regional stability.
Both sides agreed to collaborate on ensuring a successful outcome from this year’s UN conference, which will focus on the Rohingya crisis and other minority-related issues.
