South Korea's President Yoon arrested over short-lived martial law attempt
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol was detained by police Wednesday, marking an historic first for a sitting leader of the country, the state news agency Yonhap reported.
Authorities arrested the impeached leader at his residence as part of an investigation into his brief declaration of martial law on December 3.
The Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) carried out the arrest at 10:33 a.m. local time (0133 GMT) after executing a detention warrant, the report said.
This action followed a previous attempt on January 3, during which agents from the Presidential Security Service blocked investigators from entering Yoon's residence. The arrest warrant, initially set to expire on January 21, was later extended by a court.
In the second attempt to enforce the warrant, approximately 3,000 police officers were deployed to ensure access to Yoon’s compound.
President Yoon now holds the distinction of being the first sitting South Korean leader to face both an arrest warrant and a travel ban.
