A devastating earthquake struck China's Tibet region on Tuesday morning, leaving at least 95 people dead and many others injured, as reported by the state-run Xinhua News Agency.
The earthquake, registering a magnitude of 6.8 according to Chinese authorities, hit the city of Xigaze in the Xizang Autonomous Region at 9:05 a.m. local time (0105 GMT). The tremor originated at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). Meanwhile, the US Geological Survey (USGS) measured the quake's magnitude at 7.1.
Emergency response efforts have been mobilized, with approximately 1,500 fire and rescue personnel deployed to search for survivors amid the wreckage, according to China's Ministry of Emergency Management.
In the surrounding Tingri County, the townships of Changsuo, Quluo, and Cuoguo were among the hardest hit. Collapsed buildings have resulted in at least nine fatalities in these areas, while reports suggest the death toll in the region could rise as dozens are feared dead.
