Xi congratulates Trump on victory, urges stable US-China ties
Chinese President Xi Jinping congratulated Donald Trump on his victory in the presidential election and called for stable ties between the world's two largest economies.
In a message to the president-elect, President Xi expressed a hope for 'healthy and sustainable' ties between the US and China, according to China Central Television (CCTV). Xi highlighted the importance of fostering cooperation in a 'new era' to benefit both nations and the world at large, aligning with his broader vision of China’s growing influence as the US experiences shifts on the global stage.
China traditionally issues congratulatory remarks to US election winners soon after results are announced, though it delayed commenting on President Joe Biden's 2020 victory as Trump contested the outcome.
Beijing's early, optimistic message contrasts with the strained relationship that marked Trump’s first term, including a trade war beginning in 2018. Trump has also indicated he might impose new tariffs on Chinese goods if he returns to office, a move that could further impact US-China trade.
China's Foreign Ministry added its own congratulations, with a spokesperson stating late Wednesday that China 'respects the choice of the American people and congratulates Mr. Trump on his election.'
