China Foreign Minister Wang Yi to Visit Myanmar

China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi is set to visit Myanmar and Thailand from August 14 to 17, Beijing’s foreign ministry said.

According to spokesperson Lin Jian, Wang Yi will attend the ninth Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Foreign Ministers’ Meeting during his visit to Thailand. Additionally, he will join an 'informal discussion' with his counterparts from Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand.
This visit follows the recent meeting between China’s special envoy for Asian affairs, Deng Xijun, and Myanmar’s junta chief in Naypyidaw. Their discussions centered on 'peace and stability' along the China-Myanmar border, following the seizure of the northeastern military command in Lashio by rebels. Lashio is the capital of Myanmar's northern Shan State, which has experienced frequent clashes since the Brotherhood Alliance renewed its offensive in late June along a crucial trade route to China.
During his meeting with Deng, junta chief Min Aung Hlaing discussed 'internal peace processes in Myanmar' and measures to ensure "peace and stability" in the border region, as reported by the junta-controlled Global New Light of Myanmar. China, a significant ally and arms supplier to Myanmar's junta, is also believed to maintain connections with anti-regime groups controlling territories near the border.
