Myanmar army trying to destroy country: UN

Myanmar's army appears to be 'trying to destroy a country it cannot control', the UN special rapporteur to the country warned on Thursday.

Intense fighting between an alliance of ethnic minority armed groups and the military has unraveled a truce brokered by Beijing in January.
This ceasefire had temporarily paused extensive conflict in the northern part of Myanmar after a military coup in 2021 ended democratic governance.
'The junta is on its heels, losing troops, military facilities, and ground,' UN special rapporteur Tom Andrews reported during a briefing to Thailand's national security body.
'It almost appears as if the junta is trying to destroy a country that it cannot control.'
Andrews noted that the military's response to these losses has been to target civilians, with a marked increase in attacks on schools, hospitals, and monasteries over the past six months.
Earlier this week, ethnic minority fighters captured a town from the military along a crucial trade route to China's Yunnan province after several days of clashes.
Northern Shan State has been engulfed in conflict since late last month when an alliance of ethnic armed groups resumed their offensive against the military.
These clashes have undermined the Beijing-brokered truce that had temporarily halted the offensive by the Arakan Army (AA), the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA), and the Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA).
