Record 120 million people forcibly displaced globally: UN

A record 120 million individuals are currently forcibly displaced due to war, violence, and persecution, according to a UN report released on Thursday. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) described this escalating figure as a 'terrible indictment on the state of the world.'

The UNHCR highlighted that the global number of forcibly displaced people has reached unprecedented levels. Ongoing conflicts in regions such as Gaza, Sudan, and Myanmar have contributed significantly to this surge.
In its statement, the agency emphasized that the displaced population worldwide is now comparable to the entire population of Japan.
"Conflict remains a major driver of mass displacement," stated Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, during a press briefing.
A report by the UNHCR indicated that by the end of last year, 117.3 million people were living in displacement. By the end of April, this number had increased to an estimated 120 million globally.
This figure, up from 110 million the previous year, has been rising consistently for the past 12 years. Since 2012, the number of displaced persons has nearly tripled due to a mix of emerging and evolving crises and the ongoing failure to resolve protracted conflicts, according to the UNHCR.
