The airstrikes targeted the village of Thada in Rakhine state, specifically north of Minbya township, leaving devastation in their wake. Despite the gravity of the situation, the military government has remained silent, offering no immediate commentary on the reports emerging from the region.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has voiced profound concern over the escalating violence in Myanmar, particularly condemning the loss of innocent lives. His spokesperson reiterated Guterres' staunch advocacy for the protection of civilians, including aid workers, in accordance with international humanitarian law.
The military in Myanmar has increasingly resorted to airstrikes as a means to suppress the mounting armed resistance against its rule, a resistance that gained momentum following the coup d'état in February 2021, which saw the ousting of the democratically elected government led by Aung San Suu Kyi.
A report released by Nyan Lynn Thit Analytica, a Myanmar-based research and advocacy organization, at the conclusion of last year underscored the grim toll exacted by the military's aggressive tactics. Since assuming power in 2021, the report revealed that 936 civilians had lost their lives, while 878 others had been wounded in a staggering total of 1,652 airstrikes.
