Myanmar soldiers flee to India after border clash with rebels
At least 43 Myanmar soldiers have surrendered to police in the Indian state of Mizoram a day after heavy clashes with anti-junta rebel fighters, an Indian police official said on Tuesday.
'Whether they will be pushed back or not, we are waiting for further instructions from the central government' saidIndian police official Lalmalsawma Hnamte.
The official highlighted the need for further instructions before deciding whether the soldiers would be repatriated to Myanmar.
The clashes erupted as rebel forces, including members of the Chin National Front (CNF), engaged in a fierce confrontation with Myanmar's military. Reports indicated that the rebels conducted extensive battles throughout a day, targeting two camps near India's Mizoram state. Sui Khar, Vice Chairman of the CNF, confirmed the rebels' intent to expand their offensive against the ruling junta-led administration, marking a heightened escalation in their resistance efforts.
This recent series of events presents a significant challenge to Myanmar's military leadership, which has been grappling with escalating tensions since seizing power in a coup in 2021. Ethnic minority forces, in a coordinated effort starting late October, have made notable territorial gains by capturing towns and military installations, intensifying the pressure on the junta-led government.
