Myanmar anti-junta forces capture provincial town
Anti-junta forces have successfully captured a district administrative center in central Myanmar. marking a pivotal victory against the military regime, as reported by the shadow government and local media on Tuesday.
The National Unity Government (NUG) in exile celebrated this achievement as a major breakthrough, though some analysts cautioned about the challenges in maintaining control over the town of Kawlin, which boasts a population of approximately 25,000 residents.
Myanmar's military continues to grapple with a surge in violence, as various opposition groups, including ethnic minority armies, have intensified their assaults over the past two years, following the military's ousting of a democratically elected government in a coup that took place in 2021.
The opposition forces launched an attack on junta soldiers in Kawlin just last week, ultimately overpowering them on Monday and successfully taking control of the town, according to the NUG.
The NUG's defense ministry even shared a video on social media showing their troops raising the flags associated with resistance groups aligned with the shadow government.
NUG Prime Minister Mahn Winn Khaing Thann expressed his excitement on the social media platform X, stating, 'A district-level town is under our control now. What a groundbreaking victory!'
Local media outlet Myanmar Now reported that the town fell after a small group of junta soldiers surrendered, following intense combat, as confirmed by a rebel fighter.
Human rights organizations and United Nations experts have repeatedly accused the military of committing atrocities against civilians in their relentless efforts to suppress the resistance. In response, the junta maintains that it is combating 'terrorists' and has consistently disregarded international appeals for a cessation of hostilities.
