China and Russia express concerns about US at Chinese military conference

During a significant security forum in Beijing, high-ranking military officials from China and Russia did not shy away from voicing their criticisms of the United States, even as one of China's top military leaders pledged to strengthen defense cooperation with Washington.

The Beijing Xiangshan Forum, which represents China's most prominent annual display of military diplomacy, kicked off on Sunday, albeit without the presence of the country's defense minister, who traditionally hosts the event. Nevertheless, the forum did include a delegation from the United States, happening against the backdrop of escalating regional tensions.
Russia's Defense Minister, Sergei Shoigu, issued a stern warning to the West, emphasizing the peril associated with its involvement in the conflict in Ukraine. According to Russia's TASS state news agency, Shoigu stated, 'The Western approach of continually escalating the conflict with Russia poses the risk of a direct military confrontation between nuclear-armed nations, which could have catastrophic consequences.'
Shoigu further asserted that the West is actively seeking to achieve a 'strategic victory' over Russia in what he described as a 'hybrid war.' He also commended the Russia-China partnership as an exemplary model, as reported by Russian state media.
Zhang Youxia, the Vice Chairman of China's Central Military Commission under President Xi Jinping, alluded to the United States and its allies in his remarks, accusing 'certain countries' of attempting to undermine governments. Zhang stated in his keynote address, 'Some countries purposefully foment unrest, meddle in the internal affairs of other nations, and incite what they term 'color revolutions,' utilizing the Chinese government's phrase to describe efforts to overthrow the rule of the Communist Party.
Zhang stressed the importance of avoiding deliberate provocation of other nations, especially on major and sensitive issues, while also emphasizing the need for enhanced military cooperation with the United States. He underlined that Taiwan remains a core interest of China.
