34 killed in mass shooting at Thailand

A former policeman killed 34 people on Thursday in a mass shooting at a children's day-care centre in Thailand_ with media reporting the gunman later shot and killed himself.

The victims included 22 children as well as adults_ police said in a statement.

Police Major General Achayon Kraithong said the gunman opened fire early in the afternoon in the centre in the town of Nong Bua Lamphu. He said 34 people were killed but had no more details. Following the shooting_ the assailant took his own life.

Earlier_ police said a manhunt was under way for the shooter_ and a government spokesperson said the prime minister had alerted all agencies to apprehend the culprit.

Mass shootings are rare in Thailand even though the rate of gun ownership is high compared with some other countries in the region_ and illegal weapons are common.

Mass shootings are rare in Thailand but in 2020_ a soldier angry over a property deal killed at least 29 people and wounded 57 in a rampage that spanned four locations.
