Trump administration says it's cutting 90% of USAID foreign aid contracts

The Trump administration has announced plans to reduce more than 90% of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) foreign aid contracts and cut 60 billion US dollar in global assistance. This move signals a major shift in US international development and humanitarian aid efforts.

According to an internal memo obtained by The Associated Press and court filings from an ongoing federal lawsuit, the administration's proposed cuts would drastically reduce USAID projects, leaving only a handful intact for advocates to defend in legal challenges.
In a legal battle over the aid reductions, the Supreme Court intervened late Wednesday, temporarily blocking a lower court's order that required the government to release billions of dollars in foreign assistance before the deadline.
These latest disclosures highlight the administration’s strategy to scale back US aid and development programs abroad, marking a departure from longstanding policies that viewed foreign assistance as a means to promote stability, economic growth, and diplomatic ties.
The administration justified the reductions by citing inefficiencies, stating in the memo that it aimed to eliminate “significant waste resulting from decades of institutional drift.” Further reforms are expected in how USAID and the State Department allocate foreign assistance, with an emphasis on ensuring taxpayer funds align with American interests.
