US election 2024: Trump or Harris?
Democratic candidate Kamala Harris concluded her campaign for the US presidency with appearances at a historic Black church and gatherings with Arab Americans in the swing state of Michigan on Sunday. Meanwhile, Republican contender Donald Trump ramped up his campaign with intense rhetoric at a Pennsylvania rally.
Opinion polls show the pair locked in a tight race, with Vice President Kamala Harris, 60, bolstered by strong support among female voters while former President Donald Trump, 78, gains ground with Hispanic voters, especially men.
Although both candidates are viewed unfavorably by many voters, this has not curbed turnout. Reuters/Ipsos polling suggests that enthusiasm remains high, with over 77 million ballots already cast ahead of Election Day, as reported by the University of Florida’s Election Lab. This early turnout accounts for nearly half of the total ballots cast in 2020, a year that saw record voter engagement.
In addition to the presidential race, control of Congress is at stake. Republicans are favored to secure a Senate majority, while Democrats are seen as having a chance to flip the House of Representatives. The ability to pass significant legislation has been challenging for presidents whose parties do not control both chambers, highlighting the importance of these Congressional outcomes on Tuesday.
