Donald Trump campaign accuses Iran of cyberattack

US presidential candidate Donald Trump has accused Iran of carrying out a cyberattack on his campaign.

In a statement released late Saturday, the Republican nominee’s campaign team alleged that the Iranian government had stolen and distributed sensitive internal documents. This accusation followed a report by Microsoft detailing foreign attempts to interfere in the 2024 U.S. election campaign.
While the campaign team referenced previous tensions between Trump and Iran, they did not provide concrete evidence to support the claim.
'These documents were obtained illegally by foreign entities hostile to the United States, with the intent to disrupt the 2024 election and create chaos in our democratic process,' campaign spokesman Steven Cheung stated.
Trump also addressed the issue on his Truth Social app, claiming that Microsoft had informed his campaign of the hack by Iran, but noted that the attackers were 'only able to access publicly available information.'
A National Security Council spokesperson responded by stating that they take any reports of foreign interference 'extremely seriously' and strongly condemn any attempts to undermine U.S. democratic institutions.
