Three Palestinian students shot near US university campus
Three young men of Palestinian descent who were in Burlington for a Thanksgiving holiday gathering were shot and injured, one seriously, near the University of Vermont in United States, police said Sunday.
Authorities indicated that the attack could potentially be classified as a hate crime.
The incident occurred around 6:25 p.m. on Saturday in the vicinity of the UVM campus, as reported by Burlington Police Chief Jon Murad in a statement released on Sunday.
Hisham Awartani, Tahseen Ahmed, and Kinnan Abdalhamid were confronted and shot by an assailant near the University of Vermont Campus, the Burlington Police department confirmed.
Law enforcement officials are actively probing the potential motives behind the attack. Reports suggest that the victims were wearing keffiyeh, a traditional scarf, and were conversing in Arabic when the assailant targeted them.
Jon Murad, Burlington's police chief, stated that two of the victims are currently in stable conditions, while the third victim sustained considerably more severe injuries.
Family members have disclosed that all three victims were attendees of the Ramallah Friends School, a Quaker-operated non-profit educational institution situated in Ramallah.
