Tens of thousands rally for stricter US gun laws
Tens of thousands of people have rallied across the United States to call for stricter gun laws in the wake of two mass shootings. Those taking part at the marches carried slogans like 'I want freedom from getting shot'.
US President Joe Biden backed the protests_ calling on Congress to 'pass common sense gun safety law'.
The biggest rally was held in the US capital Washington where thousands of protesters gather_ They calling for tighter firearms laws.
Nineteen elementary school students and 2 teachers were killed in the May 24 shooting in Uvalde while 10 were killed in the May 14 supermarket shooting in Buffalo.
Speakers at the Washington rally informed protesters that at least 11 shootings have been reported from across the United States since Uvalde_ killing 8 people and injuring 45.
The protesters also said that Republican lawmaker have repeatedly blocked attempts to introduce tighter gun control to please the National Rifle Association.
Mayor Muriel Bowser_ Washington DC_ called for common sense gun laws_ including mandatory background checks and a ban on assault rifles.
'Enough is enough_' one of the posters the protesters carried at the Washington rally. 'Senators_ do your job. Protect our lives from Gun violence_ declared another. Hundreds of people wore shirts with the protests theme March for Our Lives.
The organisers urged the Joe Biden administration to develop a national_ comprehensive plan_ using executive action and funding_ to combat the growing prevalence of gun violence in United States.
