A devastating fire in downtown Johannesburg, South Africa, has claimed the lives of at least 70 individuals, with more than 40 others receiving medical treatment for injuries, according to reports from local media and statements made by an emergency services representative.
The fire, which occurred on a Thursday morning, engulfed a multistory building situated in the heart of Johannesburg's central business district. Johannesburg Emergency Management Services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi confirmed the grim toll, noting that the number of casualties was steadily increasing, with 70 fatalities now counted from the incident.
In a somber social media post, Mulaudzi provided an update: 'The latest update indicates that 70 bodies have been recovered, and 43 individuals remain injured as our search and recovery efforts persist.'
