‘Hegemonism not in China's DNA': Xi Jinping calls for BRICS expansion

Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for the expansion of the BRICS alliance, which comprises emerging economies, to foster a more equitable and just international order.

In a speech delivered on his behalf at the commencement of the BRICS summit held in Johannesburg, South Africa, Xi emphasized that "hegemonism is not in China's DNA" and underscored China's disinterest in engaging in great power rivalries or bloc confrontations.
Addressing a business forum, Xi's remarks, delivered by Commerce Minister Wang Wentao, reiterated China's commitment to the right side of history and the pursuit of just causes for the common good. Xi further expressed confidence in the continued growth of BRICS, stating that it would persevere despite any resistance.
Xi highlighted the unique global changes occurring in the contemporary world, underscoring their significance in human society's evolution to a crucial crossroads.
It remains unclear why Xi did not participate in the event, which saw the presence of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
During an earlier meeting with summit host Ramaphosa, Xi emphasized that their nations were at a "new historical starting point."
BRICS comprises emerging economies such as Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The alliance currently represents a quarter of the global economy, accounting for a fifth of global trade, and is home to over 40% of the world's population.
