India launches space docking experiment mission
India on Monday launched the Space Docking Experiment, a mission to establish the country's 'capability in orbital docking,' the country's Space Research Organization (ISRO) said.
The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C60) lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Center in southern India at 10:00 pm local time (1630 GMT). ISRO confirmed the successful separation of the SpaDeX satellites, celebrating it as a key milestone in India's space program.
The mission involves two small spacecraft designed to demonstrate the technology required for rendezvous, docking, and undocking operations in low-Earth orbit. ISRO emphasized that these capabilities are crucial for future human spaceflight and satellite servicing missions.
Indian Minister Jitendra Singh highlighted the achievement, noting that India has become the fourth nation to independently pursue space docking technology through its indigenous 'Bharatiya Docking System.'
