Elon Musk says X could charge all users 'small monthly payment'
Online platform X (Twitter), could introduce a monthly fee for all users, its owner Elon Musk has said, citing the need to cut down on bots.
Since Musk acquired X for $44 billion in October last year, he has implemented numerous changes, including significant layoffs, the introduction of a paid premium subscription option, a reduction in content moderation, and the reinstatement of previously banned accounts, including that of former U.S. President Donald Trump.
In July, Musk revealed that the platform had experienced a substantial decline in advertising revenue, indicating the need for innovative solutions.
Bots, which are automated accounts operated by computer programs rather than humans, are prevalent on X and are frequently used to artificially amplify political messages or spread racial hatred.
During a recent discussion with Musk, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu raised concerns about online anti-Semitism and inquired about how X could address the issue of bots replicating and amplifying hate speech.
In response, Musk disclosed that the company is considering implementing "a small monthly payment for the use of the X system" as a measure to address these challenges.
Currently, X Premium is available for 8 dollar per month in the United States, with charges varying depending on the user's location. This potential monthly fee could be part of X's strategy to enhance user experience and combat the misuse of the platform by bots.
