US, Britain, EU to sign agreement on AI standards

The United States, Britain and the European Union are expected to sign the first legally binding international treaty on artificial intelligence (AI), according to a report by the Financial Times on Thursday.

The agreement, known as the Council of Europe's convention on AI, is set to be signed by the three parties on Thursday. The treaty was developed over more than two years with input from over 50 countries, including Canada, Israel, Japan and Australia, the report stated.

The convention, which was created by the Committee on Artificial Intelligence (CAI) under the Council of Europe, focuses on safeguarding human rights, democracy, and the rule of law in the context of AI. The draft of the convention was completed in March, followed by its adoption by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe on May 17. The convention will officially open for signatures in Vilnius on September 5.
