'Seriously' considering trade ties restoration with India: Pakistan FM
Pakistan's Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar has indicated a serious consideration for the restoration of trade ties with India, which have remained suspended since August 2019.
Speaking at a press conference in London after attending the Nuclear Energy Summit in Brussels, Dar expressed Pakistan's willingness to reengage in trade discussions with India.
He highlighted the strong desire within Pakistan's business community to resume trade activities with India, stating, "Pakistani businessmen are eager to revive trade with India." Dar underscored Pakistan's commitment to thoroughly evaluate the prospects of reestablishing trade relations with India, affirming, "We will earnestly examine trade matters with India."
This statement suggests a potential shift in Pakistan's diplomatic stance towards India, following strained relations triggered by India's revocation of Article 370, leading to a downgrade in diplomatic ties by Pakistan.
Despite past tensions, both nations reached a significant agreement to renew the ceasefire along the Line of Control in February 2021. Furthermore, recent interactions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistan's newly appointed leader, Shehbaz Sharif, have hinted at a possible diplomatic thaw. Modi extended congratulations to Sharif on assuming office, and Sharif reciprocated with gratitude, indicating a tentative opening for improved bilateral relations.
