Gunmen kill nine Pakistani workers in southeastern Iran
Unidentified gunmen carried out a fatal attack in a restive southeastern border area of Iran, resulting in the death of nine Pakistani workers. This unsettling event unfolded amid ongoing efforts by both Pakistan and Iran to mend ties following recent tit-for-tat attacks.
Expressing profound shock, Muhammad Mudassir Tipu, the Pakistani ambassador to Tehran, conveyed his condolences and pledged full support to the grieving families of the victims. He stated on the X platform, 'Deeply shocked by horrifying killing of 9 Pakistanis in Saravan. Embassy will extend full support to bereaved families. We called upon Iran to extend full cooperation in the matter.'
According to Iranian state media, the police are actively searching for the three gunmen who managed to escape after the shooting incident. Baloch rights group Haalvash reported on its website that the victims were Pakistani laborers residing at an auto repair shop where they were employed. The attack also left three others wounded.
As of now, no individual or group has claimed responsibility for the ruthless shootings in Saravan, located in Sistan-Balochestan province. Pakistani Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch condemned the incident, describing it as horrifying and despicable. She emphasized, 'We are in touch with Iranian authorities and have underscored the need to immediately investigate the incident and hold to account those involved.'
On the Iranian side, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani condemned the shootings, affirming that Iran and Pakistan stand united against any attempts by enemies to damage the brotherly ties between the two nations. In a statement, he stated, 'Iran and Pakistan won’t allow enemies to damage the brotherly ties between the two countries.'
