Pakistan urges UN probe into illicit weapons supply to India

Pakistan has raised concerns over the acquisition of modern weaponry by the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and its subsequent use in terrorist activities within the country.

Deputy Permanent Representative Usman Jadoon addressed a UN Security Council debate on the threat arising from the diversion and misuse of small arms and light weapons, drawing attention to this alarming trend.
During the debate, Ambassador Jadoon emphasized the failure to achieve the objective of limiting and gradually reducing conventional weapons. He pointed out a persistent surge in global military expenditures, highlighting destabilizing developments in South Asia, where the military spending of one state disproportionately surpasses that of others.
Expressing worry over the substantial supply of conventional weaponry to this particular state and its impact on regional stability, the envoy underscored how it hampers conflict resolution, reinforces a sense of impunity, and impedes durable peace and sustainable development in the region. Moreover, Jadoon cautioned that this conventional imbalance could lead to heightened tensions between nuclear-armed states, raising the risk of conflict escalation.
Reaffirming Pakistan's commitment to establishing a strategic restraint regime in South Asia, Jadoon stressed the importance of achieving a balance in conventional forces as part of this effort.
