Modi hits out at Congress for opposing Waqf Act amendments

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday strongly criticized the Congress party for its opposition to the Waqf Amendment Act 2025.

Addressing gatherings in Hisar, Haryana, Modi questioned the Congress’s track record, stating that if the party genuinely cared about Muslims, it would have taken concrete steps like appointing a Muslim party president or offering half of its election tickets to Muslim candidates.
'I want to ask these Congress leaders—if you truly care for Muslims, then why hasn’t the party made a Muslim its president? Why not allocate 50 percent of your party’s tickets to Muslim candidates?' Modi said.
He accused Congress of prioritizing vote-bank politics over real development, suggesting that the party’s promises to Muslims were driven more by electoral calculations than genuine concern.
Modi also condemned the misuse of Waqf land, originally intended to support marginalized groups such as the poor, women, and children. He claimed that land mafias had taken over these properties, which should have benefitted Dalits, backward classes, and the Pasmanda Muslim community.
Justifying the amendments to the Waqf Act, the Prime Minister asserted that the new provisions aim to curb such exploitation and prevent Waqf boards from claiming tribal lands. He described the reform as a significant move to protect tribal rights and ensure justice for underprivileged Muslim families.
Modi further criticized the Congress-led government in Karnataka, alleging that it had reallocated reservation benefits meant for Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC) to Muslims on the basis of religion.
