US military plane flies back deported migrants to India
A US military aircraft carrying 104 deported Indian migrants landed in Amritsar, a city in northern India, on Wednesday. This marks the first group of deportations to India following US President Donald Trump’s strong stance against illegal migration during his campaign, where he vowed to remove millions of undocumented immigrants.
According to official sources cited by India Today, most of the deported individuals were from Punjab, Haryana, and Gujarat—states located in northern and western India.
Despite the strong diplomatic ties between the US and India, including the rapport between Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the repatriation process has continued.
The Indian government has stated that it has no objections to the return of its citizens and acknowledges a link between unauthorized migration and organized crime. Officials from the Indian Foreign Ministry have reiterated that India remains open to accepting verified nationals living unlawfully in any country, including the US.
According to estimates from the Pew Research Center, approximately 725,000 Indian nationals were residing in the US without legal documentation in 2022, with more expected to face deportation in the future.
