Bangladesh calls for eco-friendly UN peacekeeping missions
Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, has emphasized the need to make UN peacekeeping missions more environmentally sustainable. He underscored the importance of aligning these efforts with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Ambassador Chowdhury highlighted the necessity of adopting innovative strategies, conserving biodiversity in host nations, and providing specialized training to peacekeepers to enhance sustainability in peace operations. These steps, he noted, would support the broader objectives of Agenda 2030.
His remarks came during a briefing on Bangladesh’s contributions to UN peacekeeping missions, according to a UN press release issued on Tuesday.
Bangladesh, in collaboration with Germany, Italy, the Republic of Korea, and Slovenia, co-hosted a side event titled "Environmental Impact of UN Peace Operations – From Ambition to Action" on January 31, 2025, at the UN Headquarters in New York.
The event, moderated by Slovenia’s Permanent Representative, aimed to foster dialogue on reducing the environmental impact of UN peace operations. It also explored the potential for transitioning towards renewable energy sources, marking a step forward in creating more sustainable peacekeeping initiatives.
